Flashback to January 2012: This was about the time when the scenario that most observers of the Arab Spring feared was going to happen in Egypt actually did happened.
That is the time when Mohammed Morsi and the Muslim Brotherhood took over the government and started the wheels turning towards establishing an Islamic theocracy in Egypt.
It was an outcome that not only endangered the United States only true ally in the region, Israel, but the stability of the entire Middle East as well.
From an article in The Political Commentator one year ago: "Update: Re the new morality police patrolling in Egypt: "These “morality police” groups are gaining steam, and for many Egyptians, especially women, the idea has them fearful that the country could quickly turn into an ultra-conservative Islamic state akin to Saudi Arabia and Iran..." Now fast forward to January 2013 and the situation in Egypt has certainly not improved particularly if you happen to be a lover of freedom in general but more specifically religious freedom.
Egypt has now declined to the point where being Christian is a crime punishable by up to 15 years in prison.
"In Egypt a court has sentence a woman and her seven children up to 15 years in prison for converting to Christianity...
This is another tragic case that underscores the growing problem of religious intolerance in the Muslim world," he contineud. "To impose a prison sentence for a family because of their Christian faith sadly reveals the true agenda of this new government: Egypt has no respect for international law or religious liberty." Is this the Egypt that Barack Obama envisioned when he called for the President of Egypt to step down?
Let's say that we give him the benefit of the doubt in which case he was merely duped by the throngs in the street crying out for democracy. In that case it would merely makes him an horrendous leader and an extremely poor commander-in-chief.
If on the other hand he knew, in much the same way most of us knew, that an Islamic takeover of the Egyptian government along with everything that would come along with it was fairly certain, then that makes him something else altogether.
Whichever way that you slice it, this outcome was a classic example of the old Ralph Kramden coin flip trick when he would tell Ed Norton to call it in the air but it was heads I win, tails you lose.
