It's no longer going to simply be the slobs of NYC who don't know when enough is enough and therefore need to be told how large a sugary drink that they are allowed to buy in a store, the amount of transfat that can be in their fastfood or possibly even the amount of alcohol that they will be allowed to consume.
NYC and Mayor Michael Bloomberg have also apparently decided that new or repeat mothers cannot possibly decide for themselves whether using formula or breast-feeding is best for their new babies, so they will be nudged in the direction that the powers that be in City Hall thinks is correct.
If only they could tell me the numbers to pick in PowerBall because that would actually be something useful and productive out of a bureaucracy that obviously has too much time on its hands!
"Mayor Bloomberg is pushing hospitals to hide their baby formula behind locked doors so more new mothers will breast-feed.
Starting Sept. 3, the city will keep tabs on the number of bottles that participating hospitals stock and use — the most restrictive pro-breast-milk program in the nation.
Under the city Health Department’s voluntary Latch On NYC initiative, 27 of the city’s 40 hospitals have also agreed to give up swag bags sporting formula-company logos, toss out formula-branded tchotchkes like lanyards and mugs, and document a medical reason for every bottle that a newborn receives. [...]
With each bottle a mother requests and receives, she’ll also get a talking-to. Staffers will explain why she should offer the breast instead.
“It’s the patient’s choice,” said Allison Walsh, of Beth Israel Medical Center. “But it’s our job to educate them on the best option.” (Source)
