John Rocker, ex-Atlanta Braves reliever, on being a racist! (Video)

Who could ever forget the statements made by John Rocker, ex-Atlanta Braves relief pitcher, about taking the subway to Shea Stadium?

Although he is irrelevant now, for New Yorkers at least the name John Rocker will still conjure up memories of a time from the not-so-distant past.

Who and what was/is John Rocker?

In a book that has as own of it's goals a clarification of who and what John Rocker really is, it's helpful to look first at some of the statements that he made about New York, New Yorkers, the New York City subway system and foreigners in the United States.

In the January 2000 issue of Sports Illustrated John Rocker was quoted as having said the following:

  • On ever playing for a New York team: "I would retire first. It's the most hectic, nerve-racking city. Imagine having to take the [Number] 7 train to the ballpark, looking like you're [riding through] Beirut next to some kid with purple hair next to some queer with AIDS right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It's depressing."

  • On New York City itself: "The biggest thing I don't like about New York are the foreigners. I'm not a very big fan of foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country?"
  • On New York Met's fans: Nowhere else in the country do people spit at you, throw bottles at you, throw quarters at you, throw batteries at you and say, 'Hey, I did your mother last night — she's a whore.' I talked about what degenerates they were and they proved me right. (Source)
So could, as he claims, have had these very specific and direct comments taken out of context? And what would his original context have been?

From the book "Scars and Stripes":

"...The media have declared themselves judge, jury and executioner in the world of free speech and political correctness, and if you offer up an opinion they don't agree with, rest assured they are going to put the crosshairs right on you."

Arguing that Americans' rights are being taken away due to the war on terror: "You know what? We lost (technically). The terrorists have won. My nation is no longer free."

He says he's not against immigrants, but against those who fail to assimilate in the United States and exploit our system: "While many immigrants arrive in this country eager to work and build a better life, thousands of foreigners cross our borders each day with intentions to exploit the many taxpayer-funded government social programs such as medical care, social security, welfare, and free housing..." You buyin' that the man was taken out of context?

As president Obama so delicately said about Sarah Palin in 2008, "You can put lipstick on a pig, but it's still a pig!"

I think that the same statement would apply about John Rocker here!
