Anthony Weiner is just one more poster child for the breakdown in the moral fibre of our society!
Ancient Rome? Ancient Greece? “A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising them the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy....
…The world's great civilizations have progressed through this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance; from abundance to selfishness; from selfishness to complacency; from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back again into bondage."
Alexander Tyler (ca.1770)
Anthony Weiner will stick it out in Washington as long as he can, likely in more ways than one.
Just one more example of a wrong message being sent about morality, honor, making mistakes, owning up to those mistakes, dealing with those mistakes and then paying the price for those mistakes.
As if you thought the messages being sent to your kids by the music they listen to and the heroes they follow was bad enough! Messages of misogyny, violence, a disrespect for authority and a disregard for the value of human life.
Remember Charlie Sheen?
Then we have to deal with the lyrics of today's music that are personified by examples that include "I want to take a ride on your disco stick" or "I take you to the candy shop. I let you lick the lollypop."
I'll bet many of the people reading this have never heard those lyrics or if they heard them they really didn't listen to them. It was just so much noise on the radio.
The point is that morality in this country is, if not already there, becoming a lost art. When our "iconic" leaders in Washington commit acts of adultery, lie about them and then apologize for being caught it removes just one more layer that the youth of today can look at and say, "I want to keep my nose clean and someday be like them."
The problems in society today are great and can't be left at the doorstep of any one disgraced politician like Spitzer, Weiner, Schwarzenegger, Clinton...
But when all of a society's moral fibre begins to break down, it is a slippery slope to the point where that society loses its direction and compass. From there it is a short trip to Greece and Rome.
