Trying to invent the worlds newest widget? Have an idea for a great new product? Looking to open a restaurant? Always trying to think of the next great money making idea? The odds are against you, unless of course you key in on the industry that has been a money maker throughout time. Sex!
The domain name, sex.com, on the auction block since July 2010 due to the bankruptcy filing of its owner, was purchased by the highest bidder Clover Holdings for $13 million. That is a lot of widgets. The sale needs the final approval of the bankruptcy court in October and if it goes through will be one of the highest prices ever paid for a domain name.
For those unfamiliar with the secondary market for domain names, back in the infancy of the internet those who had the foresight would register the names of industry's and even corporations which would potentially grow to great value.
Imagine a lawyer owning law.com or an accountant cpa.com. In this case imagine owning the domain name of the oldest industry/pastime of all time, sex.com if you are somehow involved in the field. For some of those people of vision who many years ago would warehouse domain names of interest, some great fortunes were made.
