The State of The State Exemplified By Charlie Sheen: Deja Vu' All Over Again (a look back to 2008 below)

Whether it is "C'mon man" on ESPN or "What's up with that?" from SNL, the "Two and a Half Men" star Charlie Sheen was found in a trashed Plaza Hotel room, drunk, high on cocaine with a hooker supposedly cowering in a closet, his ex-wife and two kids in the room next door. Sounds like the makings of a Christmas card. At least a Hollywood Christmas card.

Sheen was not arrested and was taken to the hospital instead, most likely not the place that you or I would be right now had we committed the crimes that he did. He will go back to California, go into rehab for the umpteenth time, come out and resume shooting "Two and a Half Men". And make $100 million over the next two years.

What's more our kids will most likely continue to watch this show that is incredibly inappropriate, touching on themes many adults are uncomfortable with. These kids will be undeterred by their parents because their parents will be sitting right along side them.

All will know the history of the man but it will not matter, because the show is funny. The same way kids listen to inappropriate music, watch inappropriate movies and go to inappropriate websites. It is the parental path of least resistance of which I cannot say that I have not taken at times.

But when will it end? When will a "role model" be made an example of. Just to impress upon the youth of the country that there are consequences for actions, before they come to realize that, at least for now, a huge double standard exists.

Is Morality A Four Letter Word?

Back in November, 2008, I wrote an article called "Is Morality A Four Letter Word?" that looked at Two and a Half Men, providing a sampling of unbelievably named episodes and story lines from Season 5.

Things haven't changed since then, other than the fact that the star has had a series of criminal indiscretions and has faced no real consequences for his actions. At the time I examined the show, and the lessons it appeared it was teaching. Here is a look back, but it most likely could be a look forward as well:

"...I could not believe some of the things that are allowed on television. Not innuendos, but straight out references to sexual acts, body parts, incest, infidelity etc. I just had to comment on the fact that it appears that the breakdown in morality is complete, and standards in this country when dollars are involved has reached epic proportions. Worse, it appears to be getting done with the outright approval of the people whose job it is to make sure that what is shown, at least during times when children are watching, is appropriate..."
