Iran Elected To Serve On The United Nations Commission On The Status Of Women
From The Fact Is Stranger Than Fiction File
This is difficult to explain, even given the fact that the United Nations is the body doing it.
Is this the same Iran that recently passed a law which could lead to women being imprisoned for enjoying some time in the sun? Is this the same Iran, the government of which has backed its clerics who stated that God would rain down fury on the planet as has been happening with earthquakes and volcanic eruptions because women are immodest? Is this the the same Iran which not only allows but requires that women either be lashed or stoned to educate them while punishing them if they appear in public in what is considered an "immodest" fashion?
It sure is!
Comments By U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee
“The UN’s apologists must have thought that since Iran withdrew, under pressure, from the Human Rights Council race, we would not notice this latest abomination. They were wrong.
“That an Iranian regime that shoots and stones women would be ‘elected’ to a UN body supposedly dedicated to women’s rights adds a whole new disgusting twist to the ongoing saga of Iran exploiting the UN.
“It is long past time that responsible nations stand up for the Iranian people and not allow the UN to continue to be used as yet another instrument of oppression.
"The U.S. must also leverage our contributions to the UN to help produce effective, transparent, and accountable UN programs which can help women and others around the globe.”
