As reported in the Times of India, MI5 has discovered that al-Qaeda is inserting implants made of the explosive PETN into the breasts of female suicide bombers. These implants are not able to be detected by body scanners.
This is another example of the terrorist organizations ability to stay one jump ahead of advances in security techniques. In addition, MI5 has found that surgery is being used to implant explosives into the thighs of men.
Because the inserts are undetectable by scanning, and because such a small amount of PETN is required to blow a hole in the fuselage of a plane, new techniques and security protocols need to be developed and implemented quickly to provide security to both passengers on the plane, and those innocents who may be in and around a target.
This will mean more time and inconvenience at security checkpoints, but that is a consequence in fighting the war on terror.
