
In the beginning three months of 2009, directly after the Israeli offensive in the Gaza Strip, there were as many anti-Semitic incidents as in the whole of 2008. The trend was felt worldwide, but nowhere more clearly than in France. Incidents in 2009 were up 75% over the 2008 total, 832 to 474 ( statistics from the Jewish Community Protection Service). Although the events in Gaza can partially explain the rise, the trend had already taken an upward turn prior to 2009. One theory for the upward movement in incidents anecdotally looks at the corresponding rise in the Islamic population in France.
